Spring Term 2020

Dear Parents and Carers

Happy New Year!

As you are probably aware, SATs are around the corner for Year 6 and we still have a considerable amount of work to get through. Maths Booster will begin as an after school club in Spring 2 on Mondays so please keep this in mind. They will also receive a 90 minute Reading session from Cynthia Wardle every Tuesday morning; tutoring from Cynthia has continually proved highly successful for our children. Year 5 are very lucky because they will watch and learn alongside Year 6, continuing to make progress on their own objectives as well as becoming well prepared for the experiences of Year 6! As always, we will give your child the help and support that they will need in order to make as much academic process as possible through quality first teaching, group intervention and one to one teaching. We appreciate your continued support at home with homework, reading and any extra tasks set. Please do feel free to ask for more if required! As the Executive Headship continues, our class supported by myself three days a week with Mrs Wallace and Miss Canty every morning as 1:1 support (Mrs Wallace is also in class with us three afternoons). Mrs Wood will be teaching Grammar, Science and introducing our weekly maths area of focus on Mondays and Ms Randall will teach the class Maths, computing, art, DT and PSHE every Wednesday. Don’t forget that Reading Diaries will be expected to be in school on a daily basis and will be checked every THURSDAY. Children are expected to read at least 3 times a week.

Our theme for this term will be ‘Brilliant Britain, taking a historical journey in the first half term to World War 2 and its effect on Britain. Then during the second half term, our work will take a Geography focus, looking at the UK as a country and our locality – focusing closely on Bewdley and the River Severn. English and foundation subjects will all be linked to this. We will also be visiting Bewdley to complete a Geography and Art field visit during the second half of this term! (Dates and information to follow) The coverage for this topic can be found on the website on the BRILLIANT BRITAIN page including our brand new knowledge organisers created by us teachers for pupils to use during the study.

Our class book that most pupils will be reading and studying is, ‘Once by Morris Glietzman, who will also be our class author. If your child already has this book or would like to buy it, it makes whole class guided reading a lot more fun for them to use their own book!

The Reading Challenge will continue, where children will have an opportunity to win a book at the end of the half term if they complete their challenge grid; the child who reads the most each week will also receive a certificate in Assembly so make sure Reading Records are up to date and signed and encourage your child to read at home as much as possible. Reading Records will be checked every Thursday. The children will be finding out about Muslims in Britain today during Spring 1 and Salvation in Spring 2 and learning about Electricity in Science with Mrs Wood. They will be receiving outstanding PE lessons from Dancefest on Tuesdays and from a Worcester Warriors Coach on Thursdays. Please ensure your child has the correct PE kit in school. A breakdown of the timetable for this half term is attached with this letter.

Children may bring their own stationery in a pencil case, which can stay in their desk. They are old enough to be responsible for their own property. As they are the oldest children in the school, I expect them to set a good example to all those younger than them in everything that they do.

Homework:

Homework will be given on a Tuesday and expected to be completed by the following Monday. This will vary from English/Maths/Timestable practise/SATs revision. Your child may come home with a ‘workbook’ with set pages to look at weekly this term. Please make sure they take good care of this.  If you wish to give your child more homework, I highly recommend the CPD book range for SATs revision! Children can continue to use both Prodigy and Purple Mash from home with their given logins.

Don’t forget about this terms POWer Project. Details can be found on the BRILLIANT BRITAIN section of the website.

Please feel free to come and see me at any time and discuss any queries you might have

I look forward to an exciting year ahead!

Miss Farr
